Music has gotten itself in a weird place. It’s not just music, the way we consume media itself has changed with a never ending supply of content. With every song at the tip of my finger I found myself listening to music less. Overwhelmed with the infinite possibility.
So I got a record player and started gradually building a collection of records. It forces me to limit my options and only collect records I know I’ll enjoy all the way through. I also have to manually get up and change the record periodically. I wouldn’t say it makes it better but it’s more reminiscent of the experience I had with music when I was younger. I do find I listen to music more, with more intent. Sometimes in the wake of new exciting ways of doing things we forget the old ways are still around and work much like they used to.
This last part is a general metaphor for technology.
